The Warcraft/Path of Exiles mashup returns once again.
Ascension jumped back on the radar when they announced that their next season would be exactly the opposite of their classless ruleset point. The whole idea behind the server is that you create your own class: choose abilities from all the ones in the game, pick talents, and roll through Azeroth as your own unique build. Well, they decided to throw that out the window for their next season. This time, your character is created completely randomly–each ability is picked for you, and you have to make due with what you get. It’s called Wildcard mode, and don’t let first impressions put you off.
The first thing I thought of was the All Random mode of standard MOBA games–where instead of picking a champion you just get one? It spices up the game and lets you show how good you are by testing your adaptation skill. I’ve got a feeling the same thing will happen with this new season. Rather than dealing with veterans who have perfect builds, everyone will have crazy ability sets, and PvP will be a mashup of people trying to make what they have work. That just sounds fun. Meanwhile, PvE will be a wacky challenge of “okay so do you have a heal spell?” just trying to keep alive through dungeons.
When it comes right down to it, Ascension is the vanilla experience with a twist, and that’s enough to refresh my interest in playing a game I’ve played to death. It feels new, but familiar. I’ll be interested to see what kind of spells people end up getting with this new random mode they’re doing.
Season 3 releases on April 12th, so you’ve got a bit of time to hop on and check out the server before crunch time.
